Supporting people navigating cancer alongside of work and careers
Our purpose is threefold: to raise awareness about the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals impacted by cancer, to support those navigating the complexities of working with and beyond cancer, and to assist workplaces to create a more CancerKind® environment.
In 2021, approximately 151,000 people in Australia were diagnosed with cancer, and more than 1 million people have had or are living with cancer.¹ The number diagnosed is expected to increase by 22% over the next 10 years.² Of those diagnosed, at least 40% are of working age. ³
The cancer journey is often long, and research shows that the impact is often underestimated … not only by the individual but by families, friends, and employers. Individuals report loneliness, a sense of disempowerment, a loss of control and self-confidence, and a real feeling of being burdensome to those around them.
Many cancer patients and survivors haven’t been able to access the support they need to take control of their work and careers. Employers want to help; however, many are not well-equipped to ensure sustainable workplace participation. At LiveWorkCancer® we help to fill this void.
As Tiedtke ⁴ concludes: “The interests of employer and employee in relation to return-to-work (RTW) are interrelated; both have a responsibility and a role to play, and both need support.”
